The People of God in the Church of Nelson

Before Second Vatican Council, a diocese was sometimes seen as a geographical territory under the authority of a bishop. But the Council recalled something more: a diocese is a church, a People of God with a clear mission from the Lord:

  • To spread the news of God's love;
  • To celebrate that love especially in the eucharist of Christ;
  • To become a community, a people united in faith, hope, and love;
  • To reach out to all people in care and service, in healing and reconciliation, in peace.

Each diocese is a unique incarnation of the gospel: formed by the past, celebrating the present, and shaping the future.

It is the People of God who are the Incarnation of the Gospel in the Diocese of Nelson. When the Diocese was established in 1936, there were about 17,000 Catholics in the area; today, they number over 42,000.

The Church of Nelson, this Diocese that we know and love, grew like the mustard seed from the wilderness of western North America.

To each and every person who lived the Catholic faith in this area of south-eastern British Columbia; we thank you and celebrate your gift to us.

The Diocese of Nelson, of the People
of God, nourish the Catholic faith in
the south-eastern corner of beautiful
British Columbia.

On February 22, 1936, the Church of
Nelson (the Diocese) was created by
His Holiness, Pope Pius XI. On that day,
a new Diocese came into being and a
new faith--vision began to shine before the people.

That vision started the faith-journey of the People of God of the Diocese of Nelson.
